Grey's Anatomy Season 1 Quotes

Season 1 | Season 2 | Season 3 | Season 4

Meredith: [voiceover] The Game. They say you either have what it takes to play, or you don't. My mother was one of the greats. Me, on the other hand...I'm kinda screwed.

Derek: Oh, I'm sorry.
Meredith: For what?
Derek: You said was.
Meredith: Oh, my mother's not dead, she's...You know, we don't have to do the thing.
Derek: Oh, we can do anything you want.
Meredith: No, the thing! Exchange the details, pretend we care.

Meredith: So, um, goodbye, um...
Derek: Derek.
Meredith: Derek, right Meredith.
Derek: Meredith?
Meredith: Yeah.
Derek: Nice meeting you.
Meredith: Bye, Derek.

Bailey: I have five rules. Memorize them. Rule number one, don't bother sucking up. I already hate you, that's not going to change.

Meredith: Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass, and if I hadn't taken the Hippocratic Oath, I would Kevorkian'ed her with my bare hands.

Katie Bryce: My heads all full.
Meredith: It's called thinking. Go with it.

Cristina: Katie competes in beauty pageants.
Derek: I know that, but we have to save her life anyway.

Burke: The only person that can keep a promise that big is God, and I haven't seen him holding a scalpel lately.

Meredith: Dr. Shepherd.
Derek: Dr. Shepherd? This morning I was Derek, now it's Dr. Shepherd.
Meredith: Dr. Shepherd we should pretend it never happened.
Derek: What never happened? You sleeping with me last night? Or you throwing me out this morning? Because both are fond memories I'd like to hang on to.
Meredith: No, there will be no more memories. I'm not the girl in the bar anymore and you're not the guy. This can't exist. You get that right?
Derek: You took advantage of me and now you want to forget it?
Meredith: I did not take—
Derek: I was drunk, vulnerable and good looking and you took advantage.
Meredith: Okay, I was the one who was drunk and you are NOT that good looking.
Derek: Maybe not today, but last night I was very good looking. I had on my red shirt, my good looking shirt and you took advantage.
Meredith: I did not!
Derek: Would you like to take advantage again, say Friday night?
Meredith: No! You're an attending and I'm your intern! Stop looking at me like that.
Derek: Like what?
Meredith: Like you've seen me naked.

Meredith: Did you choose me for the surgery because I slept with you?
Derek: Yes. [silence] I'm kidding!

Meredith: [voiceover] I can't think of a single reason why I should be a surgeon, but I can think of a thousand reasons why I should quit. They make it hard on purpose. There are lives in our hands. There comes a moment when it's more than just a game, and you either take that step forward or turn around and walk away. I could quit but here's the thing, I love the playing field.

Meredith: [voiceover] It's all about lines. The finish line at the end of residency, waiting in line for a chance at the operating table, and then there’s the most important line, the line separating you from the people you work with. It doesn’t help to get too familiar to make friends. You need boundaries, between you and the rest of the world. Other people are far too messy. It’s all about lines. Drawing lines in the sand and praying like hell no one crosses them.

Derek: Seattle has ferryboats.
Meredith: Yes.
Derek: I've been living here for six weeks, I didn't know there were ferryboats.
Meredith: Seattle is surrounded by water on three sides.
Derek: Hence the ferryboats. [They both step onto the elevator.] Now I'm going to have to like it here. I wasn't planning on liking it here. I'm from New York. I'm generically engineered to dislike everywhere, except Manhatten. I have a thing for ferryboats.
Meredith: [pause] I'm not going out with you.
Derek: Did I ask you to go out with me? [turns to look at Meredith then turns back forward.] Do you want to go out with me?
Meredith: I'm not dating you, and I'm definitely not sleeping with you again, you're my boss.
Derek: I'm your boss's boss.
Meredith: Your my teacher! And your my teacher's teacher, and you're my teacher.
Derek: I'm your sister, I'm your daughter.
Meredith: You're sexually harassing me.
Derek: I'm riding an elevator.
Meredith: Look, I'm drawing a line. A line is drawn. There's a big line.
Derek: So this line...Is it imaginary, or do I need to get you a marker?
[Meredith looks at him then pushes him against the wall. They start kissing as the elevator moves. The elevator stops, Meredith and Derek stop kissing, Meredith picks up her files and walks quickly off.]
Derek: We'll talk later?!

Burke: What's this? Does anyone know what this is?
Meredith: Oh my God!
Burke: What? Speak up, Grey!
Meredith: She bit it off.
Burke: What?
Meredith: That's...his...um...penis..

Cristina: What are you doing?
Meredith: Oh, you know, just sitting here with my penis.

Meredith: So the crap crime scene guy can't get out here till tomorrow. So I get to spend the night with my penis! ... Alex, don’t say it—
Alex: Aw, it was too easy anyway.

George: Who here feels like they have no idea what they're doing?
[Everyone raises their hands]

Derek: So we're kissing but we're not dating?
Meredith: I knew that was going to come up.
Derek: Don't get me wrong: I like the kissing. I'm all for the kissing. More kissing, I say.
Meredith: I have no idea what that was about.
Derek: Is it going to happen again? Let me know next time. I'll bring breath mints. Put a condom in my wallet.
Meredith: Shut up. Now.

Meredith: [voiceover] At some point you have to make a decision. Boundaries don't keep other people out; they fence you in. Life is messy, that's how we're made. So you can waste your life drawing lines or you can live your life crossing them. But there are some lines that are way too dangerous to cross. Here's what I know. If you're willing to throw caution to the wind and take a chance, the view from the other side is spectacular.

Meredith: [voiceover] We live out our lives on the surgical unit. Seven Days a week, fourteen hours a day, we're together more than we are apart. After a while, the ways of residency becomes the ways of life. Number one : Always keep score. Number two: do whatever you can to outsmart the other guy. Number three: Don't make friends with the enemy. Oh, yeah, Number four: Everything, everything is a competition. Whoever said winning wasn't everything ... Never held a scalpel.
